All About Amarillo

Amarillo is Spanish for yellow. Originally named Oneida, Amarillo, TX changed its name to reflect the beauty of the vast fields of yellow flowers that grew around the original township when it was established in 1887.

Amarillo, Texas is the capitol of Potter County and the 14th largest city in the state of Texas. It has a population of about 230,000 in the metropolitan area and surrounding ranchland. Amarillo is within 400 miles of two major metropolitan areas: Dallas to the southeast and Oklahoma City to the east.

Amarillo, TX is deep in cowboy country. The city itself is surrounded by ranches and farmland, and the township hosts the World Championship Chuckwagon Roundup and no less than two rodeos (one of which is the world championship) in the run of a year.

Cattle are the primary basis of Amarillo's economy. A public cattle auction is held every Tuesday and most of the employment opportunities stem from the industry. Surrounding ranches raise cattle, as well as corn, cotton and wheat. The meat is then processed at local packing factories such as the one run by Tyson Foods. In fact, Amarillo, Texas is one of the nation's largest meat packing areas.

Other industry present in Amarillo, TX includes the Pantax nuclear weapons factory and decommissioning center, the only facility of its kind in the United States. Bell Helicopter also runs a plant in Amarillo producing both helicopters and the one-of-a-kind V-22 Osprey, the only propeller plane in the world with the ability to hover.

Helium and crude oil production and storage also plays a part in Amarillo's economy, though not as large a part as it once played. As the site of the most productive helium fields in the country, Amarillo was once known as the "Helium Capitol of the World."

Amarillo, Texas has only a few post secondary trade colleges in town, most of which are in the hair and beauty field, but is within commuting distance of nearby Texas A&M University. Texas A&M not only offers a range of academic programs but also has a full roster of NCAA teams, the home games of which are always well attended.

Amarillo, TX is close to many natural wonders that are favorites of photographers, hikers and picnickers alike. Palo Duro State Park is the second largest canyon system in the United States and houses the Pioneer Amphitheater, where the musical Texas is put on every night during the summer.

Other attractions include the Wonderland Amusement Park, Amarillo Zoo, and an eclectic collection of car and road sign based artwork known as Cadallac Ranch. For the hungry person, there's the Big Texan Steak Ranch, where you can get a free 72 ounce steak if you can eat it in less than an hour.

Amarillo, Texas does have a public transportation system, but most people in the area own at least one vehicle. The population density in Amarillo is very low due to the sprawling area the town inhabits and the distances from the town's amenities to the outlying ranches. Amarillo has no rail service but is on the Greyhound bus route and is less than a dozen miles from Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport.

Due to its location in the Texas panhandle, Amarillo has a very dry climate. Hot in the summer and cool in the winter, Amarillo, TX has also been known to see tornados on occasion, as it is part of the infamous Tornado Alley. This type of particular dry climate can make gardening a challenge but certain equipment such as Bahco tools can help get the job done.
