Finding Work Nearby

If the sale has just gone through on your new Amarillo, Texas house, you might be in a bit of a panic about money right now. Between mortgage payments, fees from real estate agents and lawyers, and moving expenses, things can get a bit tight - especially when you're between jobs. For you out of towners who have just arrived, don't worry about sifting through every sheaf of paper you see pinned to a bulletin board. Let us show you where to concentrate your search.

Agriculture

Unsurprisingly (considering how much farmland surrounds Amarillo) one of the city's primary industries is agriculture. All aspects of the food preparation process are represented here from actual crop growing work on a farm to the transport of newly prepared foodstuffs emerging from factories. So if you're interested in manure handling, crop raising, operating heavy machinery, or animals, this is one of the few real cities in the country where you can get such work.

Oil

The state of Texas is known internationally for its oil extraction and production, so it is probably also not a surprise to hear that Amarillo has quite a bit going on in this sector as well. All sorts of skilled and unskilled professionals are needed in the oil industry. There are the machinists who make the equipment, the rig pigs who run it, the vacuum truck drivers who transport it, and the white collar office types who keep track of everything.

Aerospace

Amarillo's rather aggressive economic development corporation's activities in the 1990s succeeded in bringing Bell Helicopter Textron, one of the largest aerospace companies in the world, into Amarillo to open a plant. Helicopters, obviously, are their primary output, but vertical take-off aircraft are also on the development roster. Anyone with an aerospace engineering education, training in technical writing or development, or skilled trades training in running power strap feeders or working on engines should apply here.

Service

And then there are the jobs that appear everywhere. While Tyson Foods is the city's largest employer, the public school board and St. Anthony's Health Care System are also top ranked. For men the most popular sectors are construction, accommodation, and food services, which is good news for anyone who used to be a Mississauga caterer. Women, on the other hand, favor education and health care, as well as accommodation and food service. Public administration and finance also appear on both lists.
